Getting in shape for less in summer

Summer is the perfect time to get fit and healthy – the days are longer, the weather is warmer and there’s more motivation to get out and about. We know how hard it is to go for a run or even just leave the warmth of your house in the winter when it’s raining or snowing – the temptation to stay inside nearly always wins! But we have a long way to go before winter arrives so now is the time to start getting in shape.

For those of you trying to stick to a budget this year, or just trying not to over-spend, “getting fit” doesn’t mean you have to join a huge, expensive gym or pay hundreds of dollars/pounds for a personal trainer – so don’t panic. There are many things you can do to start being healthier and doing more exercise that won’t cost you a penny.

There are a lot of simple things we can do to help us get fitter but many of us don’t do them, whether it’s because we don’t have time or just because it’s not at the forefront of our minds – but it needs to be so that we stay healthy in general. Take a look at these ideas for getting in shape for less this summer…

Start walking – this is probably the simplest form of exercise but such a great one too! If you walk for 30 minutes-1 hour a day you could increase your fitness massively. Instead of catching the subway or the bus to work, why not walk the 15-minute journey instead? Do that to and from work every day and that’s your 30 minutes of exercise done! Walking is great for people who don’t really like to do exercise because it’s easy and enjoyable, especially if you walk with a friend.

Go for a run – for those of you who do like to exercise but don’t want to pay to go to the gym, running is the perfect option. It’s a fantastic cardio work out and is absolutely free! Whether you prefer to run in the woods, along a sandy beach or along the roadside, make sure you have the correct running shoes – you can find some brilliant deals online and your Qmee is always there to show you great price comparisons.

Take an exercise class – if you find exercise boring, or you just enjoy it more when you do it with other people, exercise classes are the perfect option for you. Many gyms will allow you to pay for the class each time you go rather than sign up and have to pay the full membership fee. Have a look online at your local exercise classes to see which one best suits your budget. From Zumba to weight lifting, aerobics to yoga, there’s a class for everyone.

Reduce your artificial sugar intake – artificial sugars can be found in many pre-packaged foods such as baked goods, candy, sauces and dips. Try and substitute the artificial sugar in your meals with natural sugars like maple syrup or honey. Rather than have a pre-packaged cookie when you’re craving something sweet, have a piece of dark chocolate (it contains less sugar than milk chocolate and sweets). You’ll also reduce the amount you’re spending if you stop buying candy, cookies and baked goods so it’s win-win for your health and your wallet!
